Projects
YAPPENDA’s projects connect biodiversity research, Indigenous knowledge, restoration, education, and community-led conservation across Tanah Papua.
Current & Featured Projects
A biodiversity training expedition led by YAPPENDA with Cenderawasih University students and Indonesian and international partners. The expedition rediscovered Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna and strengthened Papuan field-research capacity.
Expedition Cyclops 2023
Status: Completed expedition with ongoing research follow-up
Location: Cyclops Mountains, Papua
Continued camera-trap monitoring and baseline research are helping improve understanding of the echidna’s distribution, conservation needs, and long-term protection.
Attenborough’s Long-Beaked Echidna Monitoring
Status: Ongoing
Location: Cyclops Mountains
Gison Morib’s EDGE Fellowship
Building on YAPPENDA’s monitoring work in the Cyclops Mountains, Jeff Wonda’s EDGE Fellowship seeks to improve understanding of the species’ distribution, population status, and conservation needs. The fellowship also supports collaboration with BRIN toward securing formal legal recognition and protection for Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna in Indonesia.
YAPPENDA’s field team continues to document wildlife, plants, ecosystem conditions, and conservation threats within one of Papua’s most important biodiversity areas.
Cyclops Mountains Biodiversity Monitoring
Status: Ongoing
Location: Cyclops Mountains
YAPPENDA operates tree nurseries and supports reforestation, mangrove restoration, agroforestry, erosion control, and watershed protection. Future monitoring will help evaluate restoration methods and long-term ecological outcomes.
Restoration and Reforestation Programme
Status: Ongoing
Locations: Cyclops region, Baliem Valley, Yahukimo, and approved mangrove sites
This developing initiative combines customary land stewardship, forest protection, restoration planning, agroforestry, and potential watershed conservation.
Baliem Valley & Yahukimo District Community Conservation and Agroforestry
Status: Early-stage development
Location: Baliem Valley
YAPPENDA supports Indigenous communities seeking formal recognition of customary land rights and community-led management of primary forest.
Research opportunities may include participatory mapping, biodiversity baselines, land-use documentation, and long-term conservation monitoring.Primary Forest Protection and Land-Rights Support
Primary Forest Protection and Customary Land-Rights Support
